A wide-ranging, skills-based course for practising lecturers in the further and higher education sectors who are required to design courses and/or deliver lectures in the English language.
The courses are written and delivered by experienced practitioners in the field who are also qualified English Language Teachers.
The standard course provides 30 lessons (22.5 hours) contact time plus assignments.
Course content
We have in-depth discussion with all delegates enrolling on this programme to ensure that we can accommodate their specific needs within the framework of their chosen course.
These are popular topics covered on these courses, though the content of any actual course is determined in conjunction with the delegate(s) attending.
- Lecturing / presentation skills, including opportunity to ‘trial’ lectures
- Effective communication techniques
- Cross-cultural issues: dealing with multi-national groups
- Preparation of course materials and unit outlines
- Setting of examination questions and other assessment tasks
- Terminology used in examinations
- Marking systems
- Correspondence with students and other members of the academic community
- Comparison of UK and other systems; entry routes to UK universities
Required level of English
To obtain maximum benefit from the course, delegates should have a working knowledge of English equivalent to level B2 on the CEFR. We will assess delegates’ levels as part of the registration process. Delegates who feel they need to ‘brush up’ their English before taking the course may like to join one of our general English courses at appropriate level for one or more weeks.
In the case of individuals or a closed group, if the delegates’ levels are below B2 we can provide a modified course to include more direct language support, though an extended stay incorporating a general English course might prove more beneficial.
Delegates in closed groups may be from the same or different faculties.
See sample timetable (below) for a ‘typical’ week’s programme.
